Chair's Update -- Dr. Lynn Johnson Greetings!
The 2003/04 academic year was a rich and full year for the Department
of Management. Students continue to enroll in our Department at record
levels. Our graduation rates follow those record enrollments by sending
students into the work place prepared to build careers. While our
central mission remains to provide quality management education leading
to baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees, our techniques and
methods often do change.
For the eleventh year, the Department of Management is conducting the Summer Study Abroad in Europe. This program provides students the opportunity to
study European culture and business practices while gaining course credit. For Summer 2004, Dr. Derrick D’Souza led our classes and students during Summer I.
These students visited Munich, Paris, London, and Edinburgh. Professor Don Powell will lead Summer II students in their study of Business Policy & Strategy and Europeon
Business Practices while visiting London, Venice, Munich, and Croatia-Slovenia.
Case studies with site visits are planned for such organizations as
Lloyd’s of London, The Body Shop, and Parliament. The Parliament visit
allows the students to focus on the common currency, merging economies,
and the economic centralization that is being debated within the
Europeon communities. Online MBA in Administrative Management There
is much to be said about recent and ongoing curriculum enhancement
efforts. After reviewing competitive proposals from departments across
campus, the University awarded our Department a major
Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF) grant to assist faculty in
redesigning our MBA curriculum to allow online, web delivery. The
Department’s award winning proposal received the largest dollar award
from the University. Our Faculty has made great use of this grant
award. Because of this grant and our Faculty determination to serve our
students, our Department is ready to announce the first online delivered MBA program in the College.

Partnering to Enhance the Student Experience Management Department professors teaching the capstone Business Policy course work to enhance the student experience through the Integrated Case Competition. Enterprise Rent-A-Car serves as the sponsor of the case competition, having given more than $40,000 over the past three years to provide prize money and awards to the students. The competition puts students in the role of consultants advising a real company on appropriate actions to take to improve performance. Executives from the company under study, along with other business people from the DFW area, serve as judges to determine the competition winners. Since we last reported on the competition, students have looked at three different companies. In the Spring of 2003, we took a little different approach and looked at our first non-profit organization, The Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville, Texas. Kathryn Voris, the zoo curator, and Paul King, head zoo keeper, represented the zoo. Please click here for the other judges and winning student teams for Spring 2003. For the Fall of 2003, the students worked on a small local financial firm, Grunden Financial. Mr. Ricky Grunden, owner of the firm and a past UNT student, represented the company. Please click here for the judges and the winning student teams for Fall 2003. Most recently, in the spring of this year, we turned the students' attention to larger local company – Service King Collision Repair. Service King was represented by Mr. Eddie Lennox, founder and owner, his daughter Jennifer (a recent UNT alum) and two of the top Service King managers. Also serving as a judge was John Laplante, now the director of IT Development for Accor Hotels North America, but also a UNT alum and a member of the 2nd place team when the competition was first held in 1997! Please click here to see pictures for the judges and the winning student teams of Spring 2004. The competition continues to be a great learning tool for the students and always provides a number of new ideas for the companies who are involved. We are also very thankful for the continued support of Enterprise Rent-A Car which allows us to let the students finish off their college careers with a wonderful experience that lets them see how the knowledge they have accumulated applies in a real world setting. If you would be interested in having your company involved as either a sponsor or a potential subject of study, we would love to talk with you. You can contact Dr. Grant Miles, co-course coordinator, by email to miles@unt.edu or by phone at (940) 565-3469. YET – Young Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow

The 2003 title sponsor was The Jerry Durant Family of Dealerships. Here are the highlights:
First Place winner receiving $25,000 was Advanced Laser Composites, Inc.—a team from the University of Texas at Austin. Using a proprietary technology licensed from UT and ongoing research efforts, Advanced Laser Composites will manufacture tools and dyes for the metal casting industry that are superior to current industry standards. Second Place received $15,000 and went to Cooking in College, a joint team from UNT and TCU. A puzzled college student who did not know how to cook spaghetti for dinner one evening sparked the creative idea for creating the company “Cooking in College.” A student was helping his roommate cook dinner one night while the two were off at college. The confused look that his roommate had on his face when asked how to brown some meat, caused a light bulb to immediately go off. Shortly thereafter, this student came home from college and shared his idea for teaching other college students to cook with his longtime best friend and now business partner. Their company concept is to teach other college students how to save money by cooking simple recipes on their own. Their product?—an instructional DVD complete with costumed cooks and a live rock band background and a cooking recipe book sold together in a gift pack. Third Place and $10,000 went to Chipotle Business Group, a joint team from UT Austin and UT Arlington. Addressing the issue of quick, easy, economical, accurate, and comprehensive safe testing of water quality, CBG uses a unique electronic chemical sensor technology developed and patented at UT. Often referred to as the “lab on a chip” or “taste chip,” the technology can be packaged as a disposable cartridge and processed with a hand held device for purposes of water testing. Other event sponsors were: Gold Sponsor: Wells Fargo BankSilver Sponsors: Eddie and Virginia Gilmore of Gilmore Investments, Fort Worth Business Press, KRLD Radio, SmarteSolutions, Inc., State Farm Insurance, UNT Department of Management, and WPI Productions, Inc. Bronze Sponsors: Denton Record-Chronicle, DocuCorp, Humana, NorthStar Bank of Texas, Pinnacle Graphics, Southwest Securities, UNT Office of the President and Provost, and UNT Office of Development. Partnering with the Rotary Club of Dallas, entrepreneurship students have the opportunity to give back to others. Camp Enterprise is a three day camp for students of Dallas Independent School District about the free enterprise system. Students from UNT work with Rotarians to serve as co-facilitators of high school students. The benefits to UNT students? Sharing what they’ve learned about entrepreneurship, great networking with business professionals, and giving back to their community. UNT Student Business Plan Competition The UNT Murphy Enterprise Center Business Plan Contest winners were announced Saturday, May 3, 2004. Prize money totalling $3,000 was awarded to competing teams and each of the finalists also won the right to a member of SCORE serving as a finalist for their project. SCORE (The Service Corp of Retired Executives) has partnered with the Murphy Enterprise Center to provide mentors to each of the teams to assist them in getting their business operational. First place and $1500 was awarded to Indoor Athletics and Training Center—a family oriented indoor soccer arena that will include a snack bar, pro shop, and arcade. It will be located in NE Tarrant County. Location and experience of their management team are the strengths of this company. Team members are from the Department of Management Department and are Jason Burbach, Scott Gaulen, and Jorge Rengfio. Winning second place and $1000 was GRS3. They provide a solution the problem of tracking stolen vehicles. The product is necessary because existing alarm systems and theft deterrents do not deter theft. What this company provides is an alarm that is silent, immediately notifies the owner of attempted theft, and provides a means of locating the stolen property. Team members are from the College of Engineering. Team members are George Poulcherios, Lance Sandmann, Josh Stohl, Sean Vreeland, and Robert Wilson. The third place team and $500 was awarded to Vinny’s Laundry Service. Vinny’s picks up customers’ dirty laundry at their doorstep, cleans and folds it, and then drops it off again at their door the next business day for virtually the same price that it would take them to do it themselves. The target market is Denton college students living in dorms and large area apartment complexes. Team members are from the Department of Management and are Vincent Ferttita and James Gebhart, Jr. The contest was open to all UNT students. Other finalists were The Side Clothing Company and Shooters. Plans were evaluated based on the written plan, the presentation to a panel of judges, and the viability of the project. |
