BCIS 5620 Networking and Telecommunications (Dr. Vanecek)
Spring 2006

This course will introduce the student to the fundamentals of telecommunications and networking. Concepts to be covered include the layers in the TCP/IP and OSI standards, protocols, WANs and LANs, management and security, and an overview of telephony issues. Students will plan, install, and manage their own NT network. Students completing this course will have the ability to:

  1. describe the components, purpose, functioning of each layer in a networking layer architecture.
  2. describe the basic concepts and techniques used in telecommunications and networking.
  3. analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various network implementations.                                                                   BCIS - A World of Opportunity

  5. configure, setup, and manage a Microsoft Windows Windows 2000 network using TCP/IP.

PDI LAB:

Students will have authorization to use the PDI East Lab Room 120 microcomputer and terminal lab to do class assignments. Students will have access to two computers and interconnections, NT5 Server and Professional software, and two removable hard disks. Access to computing resources will be on a walk-in and reservation basis. All hands-on networking will be completed using this equipment.
