What is Decision Science?

Decision Science can be defined and applied in many different facets of the world of business. In an age where information and data abounds, the need for professionals who can decipher vast amounts of data has increased exponentially. Making decisions based on "gut feeling" used to be the norm; but since the advent of decision analysts, managers and leaders can now use data and factual evidence to support their claims and courses of action. One may be surprised that there is no business function explicitly called "decision science," but where there is a need for any type of business analyst, decision support, business modeling (and the list goes on!), there is a fit for a Decision Science graduate.

The coursework for a BBA in Decision Science is challenging and robust. The first half of the degree is just like all other business students: you will learn key concepts of marketing, finance, accounting, and the role of computers in business. After the first two years, however, is when the degree really takes off. The next four semesters will be spent learning about the science of management. These classes entail:

  • Building complex models to find the optimum solution to a host of business-related problems
  • Learning how to effectively database information for more in-depth analysis and retrieval
  • Applying advanced statistical tools/methods to predict consumer behavior and explain observed phenomena; and,
  • Using Six Sigma methodology to quantify processes and make them more efficient, therefore minimizing cost and increasing profits.

Once you have completed a Decision Science degree, you will truly be an asset to any prospective company. This degree can be applied to so many areas that your career potential is limitless.
